You likely heard the stories. You’ve seen it in the papers. Oprah too sang the praises. In New Orleans, we have witnessed a Miracle. Finally the city is able to provide an excellent education. Yes, the skies opened up. The rains fell. The area was flooded. And now…It’s a Miracle in the form of a Recovery School District. The problem is the phenomenon never materialized. Instead what we have is supernatural failure. It is uncanny what we have done to further destroy a community and impede our children’s education. What makes this so distressing is that the talk of The Miracle spreads. Now, we see other cities seeking a similar progression.
Dr. Raynard Sanders, Ed.D., host of New Orleans Imperative with over thirty years of experience in teaching, educational administration, and economic and community development, and also the former Principal of John McDonogh High School offers the community’s perspective. The people of New Orleans have more than words of caution. They say, ‘America, please consider the tragic John McDonogh saga all at the hands of the state run Recovery School District.” The John McDonogh High School Miracle has ended. But there is a solution…perhaps, metaphorically a truer resurrection.
Dr. Sanders reminds us, “For more than nine years John McDonogh High School has been the victim of gross mismanagement by the state’s Recovery School District.” However, he continues,” Last week the school’s community asked the state education board to return John McDonogh to the Orleans Parish School Board. At that meeting attorney Willie Zanders submitted an excellent letter to the state education board citing nine compelling reason why John McDonogh should be returned to local control. In the letter Attorney Zanders outlined the Recovery School District’s ineptness and unconscionable disregard for the students at John McDonogh High School.
