LESSONS FROM THE 1963 BOYCOTT
On October 22, 1963, more than 200,000 Chicago Public Schools students boycotted school to protest segregation and inequality, in one of the largest civil rights demonstrations in Chicago’s history. Join us for two events that celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 Boycott of Chicago Public Schools and examine it in light of the contemporary fight for public education.

In this interactive teach-in organized by Education for Liberation Network, Chicago Teachers Union Black Caucus, and Teachers for Social Justice you will have an opportunity to watch a short clip from the upcoming documentary on the boycott and talk directly to boycott organizers and participants in a series of small group discussions.

Join us on the 50th anniversary of the boycott for a debut screening of Kartemquin’s in-progress documentary ’63 Boycott, spoken word performance by Malcolm London of Young Chicago Authors, and a panel discussion with:
Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis,
Rosie Simpson, 1963 Boycott leader,
1963 Boycott young organizer Fannie Rushing,
Historian Elizabeth Todd-Breland from the University of Illinois at Chicago,
and Jasson Perez from Black Youth Project.
