Project Description

We are More Than Concerned Parents We are Civic Activists

Chicago parents wonder and say aloud, “How are our children going to succeed in life without the proper tools to achieve?” This is one of the many questions citizen parents ask Mayor Rahm Emanuel. There are many more concerns; all address the needs of our children. Sadly, these queries fall on deaf ears. The City government offices are closed to the people. Portals are open only to philanthropists, politicians, and the powerful, many of whom sit on the School Board.

This Board of millionaires/billionaires serves at the pleasure of the Mayor. Inauspiciously, the children are not served. Citizens ask why. Why is the city of Chicago among the few that does not have an elected School Board? Parents appeal for their right to speak. To be better represented by an elected School Board.

For too long they have seen what occurs when a Board is Mayoral selected. Under this Administration, school closures have become the education policy of convenience. If funds are tight cancel classes, fire professional Teachers, close community schools and centers, and oh yes, overcrowd the remaining classrooms. The children cry out in pain and parents say, “This cannot stand.” It is time for a change.

Please join informed Chicago parents Vicki Lugo and Jeanette Taylor Smith, Maria Salcedo and Steve Guy and other Kenwood Oakland Community Organization members in their Journey for Justice.
