Project Description

Reverend Barber and We Believe it is Possible. Part I

Reverend Barber, Board Member of the NAACP, passionately spoke recently at the Organizing Summit, on October 4, 2013. EmpathyEducates is privileged to present snippets of his speech.

Doctor Reverend Barber proclaims, “Change Comes When We Find A Way to Come Together Around Common Good and Common Ground!” He speaks of the five principles that guide we, the people. We believe in Economic Sustainability. Education Equality for All. Health Care for All…We hear the call to protect and care for our sick, to honor those in need. We believe in the need to Address the Disparity in our Social Justice System. We believe that we must Protect and Expand Voter Rights, Civil Rights, Woman Rights, Immigrant Rights, and the Right for All to be Free. We believe in possibility!

Reverend Dr. Barber has written one book entitled, “Preaching Through Unexpected Pain”, and several articles and is currently working on his second book. He has been featured on Wall Street, CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, Crisis Magazine, and has spoken, preached and lectured around the country.

[Read what he has to say on countless subjects.]

By the grace of God, Rev. Dr. Barber, along with local, state, and national NAACP leaders, has helped to lead the fight for voter rights, just redistricting, health care reform, labor and worker rights, protection of immigration rights, and reparation for women survivors of Eugenics, release of the Wilmington Ten and educational equality. Perhaps he is known best throughout the nation for his lead in organizing North Carolina’s Moral Mondays, beginning in April 2013 and continuing through this day.

May we join him in our moment of deep transformation and National Reconstruction. Let us unite and do the deeds needed to bring about authentic rights, freedom, and justice for all.

About the AFT Human Rights Conference

Over the last 30 years, the AFT has organized a series of biennial Civil, Human and Women’s Rights conferences addressing a wide range of social justice issues.

This year’s conference, organized in collaboration with the National Opportunity to Learn Campaign, the National Education Association, and Communities for Public Education Reform, comes at a critical time for our members and our communities. Will public education continue to exist as a truly public institution that aspires to provide equal opportunity for all people? Will we continue to have a strong labor movement fighting for economic justice? At this moment in history, access to good public schools that prepare all students for college and career is a fundamental civil and human right.

It is time to reclaim the promise of public education.
